The Bpian Chinese Orchestra is one of the Performing Arts Groups in the school. It was established in 1993 with a current enrolment of 100 student performers. The student performers are divided into various instrumental sections. Namely, Strings, Plucking, Woodwinds and percussion, and they have practices three times a week. The new intakes of student performers have to undergo a musical audition before they are identified to play specific instruments in the performing troupe.
BPCO also recruits PSLE students with prior experience, knowledge and talent in the playing of Chinese instruments under the Direct School Admission Programme. Our current student performers with music flair are selected to participate in the annual Chinese Orchestra Music Camp organized by the MOE CCA Branch (in collaboration with SCO). There, they receive special tutor from professional musicians and get to perform in a concert. Throughout the whole camp, CO members get themselves exposed to higher levels of music. We have performed on several occasions like the school’s Chinese New Year Celebrations, Speech Day, the 45th Anniversary, Foreign officials, ministers, educators, MOE officials School Visit and staged several successful public performances.

Here's a summary of what I said today: 1) With effect from the recruitment of new sec ones, there is going to be a total of three practices per week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday). However, you are not required to come for practices for all three days. I.E If you are currently not in the main orchestra for all the songs, you are to come for practice on Tuesday and Friday. If you are already in the main orchestra, your practice days are Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday is the day for the juniors (meaning those not in main orchestra) in Plucking Strings, Strings, Woodwind and Percussion Section to come (Instructors-in-charge are Mr Chin and his brother, Mr Ng and Mr Wong), while juniors in the Tenor Section are to come on Wednesday (Mr Sim in charge). ** If you think that your skills are not up to standard, you are of course welcomed to join in the practice on Tuesday even if you are in the main orchestra. 2) For the CCA Roadshow this Friday, 8th January, please report to MP1 and MP2 by 1.30pm sharp. Be early if you can. Start your tuning immediately as time is very limited. Be pro-active and show initiative in helping your other fellow CO members, even if they are not in your section. For instruments that are light-weighted, please do help the percussion section after you have moved your instruments as they have a lot of heavy instruments to bring down to MP5. Of course, the guys would have to help out with the heavy instruments. Please take note, the official start time for the CCA Roadshow is 2pm to 3pm. After moving the instruments back to the music store, you don't have to stay back for the remaining practice (tentatively). The songs that we will be performing are 菊花台 and 簸箕与风筝舞曲. For Plucking Strings Section + cello, there is the possibility where 阿里郎 will be played as well. **Please maintain a high level of discipline at all times, you would not want to leave down a bad impression on the new sec ones. |
